A passion, then a catalogue

It starts with park maps folded into a pocket and weekends planned around a roller coaster or a penguin pool. Plan enough of those outings and one thing becomes obvious: the information exists, but it is scattered. A tourist office here, a forum there, a map that only knows about restaurants, and ten open tabs to answer one simple question: what is there to enjoy, around me or where I'm heading?

TeriLand is the answer I wish I had found: a single map, filtered by mood, by audience and by area, where every venue has its own page.

What the catalogue covers

The catalogue gathers entertainment venues open to the public: theme parks and amusement parks, water parks, zoos and aquariums, leisure parks, indoor play centres and resorts. Each page says where it is, who it is for and what you'll find, then points to the venue's own site for opening hours and tickets.

What I'm aiming for

That the urge to go out finds its answer on a single map: no account to create, no ten tabs, and no wondering who paid to show up first.

The road ahead is clear: grow the catalogue venue by venue, well beyond today's borders; open the pages to contributions from the people who know these places better than I do; and let all of it live somewhere other than the site, where enthusiasts gather.

What I stand by

• Independence

  No venue pays to be listed, nor to rank higher. The order you see follows your filters, never a price list.

• The essentials, nothing more

  A page answers three questions: where, who for, what. Then it steps aside for the venue's own site. No paragraphs written for search engines.

• Checked by hand

  Every venue is reviewed before it joins the catalogue: no scraping, no bought lists. Anything no source confirms stays unpublished.

How the catalogue is kept

Pages are put together from venues' official sites and open public sources, then corrected as reports come in. The catalogue grows and updates continuously: a venue that closes, changes name or changes category is amended as soon as we know. Opening hours and prices, though, move too fast to be guaranteed here: the page always points to the official source.

Me, and nobody else so far. I design websites by day and visit parks the rest of the time. I pick the venues, write the pages, keep the map and answer the messages: it's slow, but it's proofread.
